Privacy Policy
Last updated: 13 September 2026
This policy covers the Werewolves apps for iPhone, iPad and Mac, and the browser version at werewolves.samalstudios.com. Werewolves is made by Samal Studios ("we").
The short version
- No account. You don't register or sign in with us. Game Center sign-in is handled by Apple.
- Video and audio go straight between players. Your camera and microphone are sent directly to the other players' devices over encrypted connections. They never pass through our servers and are never recorded.
- Games are forgotten. Our game server keeps a room only in memory while it's in use, then discards it. There is no database of players or games.
- No ads, no tracking, no analytics.
What we process, and why
Your name and the game
To play, the app sends the name you choose (or your Game Center nickname), your room code and your moves (votes, night actions, reactions) to our game server. The server shares them with the other players in your room according to the rules of the game. All of this is held in memory only, and a room is deleted about 15 minutes after everyone has left.
Camera and microphone
The camera is optional. The microphone lets you talk to other players. Video and audio travel peer-to-peer between players' devices using WebRTC, which encrypts them. Our server only passes along the short technical messages needed to set up those connections. To find a network path, your device contacts public STUN servers operated by Google and Cloudflare, which can see your IP address as part of that process.
Chat and speech
Messages you type are sent to our game server and shown to the players who can see you at that moment. When you play alone with bots, the app can transcribe what you say using Apple's speech recognition on your device, and sends the resulting text to the game server so the bots can respond. We don't keep transcripts after the game ends.
Bots that talk
When you play alone with bots on a device with Apple Intelligence, the bots' lines are written on your device.
A host can also add their own Anthropic API key so bots talk in their room. The key travels over an encrypted connection to our game server, is kept in memory for that room only, and is never stored, logged or shown to other players; it's discarded when the host leaves or the room closes. While a key is in use, the game server sends the details a bot needs to Anthropic's Claude API with that key: player names, public game events, what was said at the table, and the bot's own secret role. Anthropic processes this under the key owner's agreement with Anthropic, and usage is billed to them. The app can remember your key in your iCloud Keychain if you choose. You can turn off talking bots in Room Settings.
Game Center and SharePlay
If you sign in to Game Center, Apple handles your identity, achievements, leaderboards and party codes under Apple's privacy policy. SharePlay sessions over FaceTime are also run by Apple; the app only shares the room code with the call.
On your device
The app stores your chosen name, your seat in recent rooms (so you can reconnect), your settings and how many games you've played, on your device only. The browser version keeps the same kind of details in your browser's local storage.
Server logs
Like any website, the servers that host Werewolves may briefly record technical request data such as IP addresses to keep the service secure and running. We don't use it to identify you or build profiles.
Children
Werewolves involves live video and voice chat with other people and is not directed at children under 13.
Your choices
- Play without a camera, mute your microphone, or type instead of talking.
- Turn off talking bots in Room Settings.
- Revoke camera, microphone or speech recognition access at any time in your device's Settings.
- Delete the app to remove everything it stored on your device.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and the date above.
