Getting started
How do I add an account?
Open Accounts and use the + button in the toolbar. Give it a code, a name, an icon and a type — asset, liability, equity, income or expense. These types are what make the reports and the accounting equation add up.
How do I record a transaction?
Go to Transactions › New Transaction, or press + on an account. Enter a title and amount, then choose the account the money moves from and the one it moves to. Every transaction has two sides — that's what keeps the books balanced.
What are templates?
Templates prefill a transaction you make often. Kost ships with a dozen, and you can turn any transaction into your own with Save as Template.
Importing a bank statement
How do I import a CSV?
Use Import CSV in the Dashboard or Accounts toolbar, choose the file, pick which account it belongs to, and check the preview. Kost detects the delimiter, the date format and whether amounts are European or US style, and guesses the columns for you.
What happens to rows I don't categorise?
Money out goes to Uncategorised Expenses and money in to Uncategorised Income, so the import stays balanced. You can recategorise later.
Budgets & subscriptions
How do budgets work?
Open Budgets and type a monthly amount next to any expense category. The bar fills as you spend, turning amber near the limit and red once you pass it.
How do subscriptions post automatically?
Add a subscription with an amount, the accounts and how often it repeats. Kost posts each charge on its date the next time you open the app, and shows your true monthly recurring total.
Privacy & amounts
Can I hide amounts?
Yes. The eye button in the toolbar blurs every amount at once. To keep a single account blurred by default, turn on Hide amounts for it from the account, or right-click it in the Accounts list.
Where is my data kept?
On your device. Kost has no account and sends nothing to a server — see the privacy policy.
